After our Mana visit we decided to spent a few days in Matopos National Park before heading back to Botswana. There’s a cave with beautiful rock paintings. Not easy to find though and for sure not after rainy season. The week before another couple tried and they came back without reaching the cave. They had lost track and it was just too difficult to get there, according to them. We like a proper challenge and so we went for it. We cut ourselves a way trough the jungle. Literally. Our guide in front, Jens right behind him, both waving their machete as if they’ve never done anything else, smashing everything in their way. I simply walked behind them, using mine more to keep flies at a distance…

After a couple of hours, we got to more rocky underground, so no more cutting. This time it was simply following the arrows, if they were still visible and trying to find the cave. Jens was there before, so he remembered where it was. I must say, it was a pretty cave and the paintings were very well preserved. Our guide wasn’t really a help when it came to giving some more information about it. He just knew the paintings were old…

Time to head back and since we did quite a detour on the rocky part, I thought we could easily shorten it a bit. Straight down it was! I was a bit overconfident, so even though I started first, I came down last. Too much shortcut. When we got back, we were quite exhausted. But after a nice brunch, ready to move on and go explore more of the beautiful, rocky park. We even found a hot shower, can you believe it? It wasn’t too hot these days anyway, so the shower was more then welcome!

Too hot really was an understatement. Our last morning we had breakfast wearing all our clothes and searching for wind shelter next to the car. It was truly cold! Time to head back to warmer places. And believe it or not, but this time it was probably not really warmer until we got back to Europe. Anyway, this particular breakfast was definitely the coldest of the trip!
